Oven
Crisped Tofu Nuggets
This simple recipe gives tofu a crispy crust and a chewy
interior. Perfect for dipping into your favorite sauce.
Kid-friendly.
1 pound extra firm tofu (Surata brand is delicious)
1 Tb. Sesame oil
1 Tb soy sauce, tamari soy sauce, or Bragg’s liquid aminos
1 clove garlic, crushed
Preheat oven to 400 degrees
If using water packed tofu, remove from package and slice block
in half to make block thinner. Place tofu on a plate and place
something heavy (cast iron skillet, plate and filled tea kettle)
on top of tofu to squeeze out excess water. Let tofu rest for
approx. 10 minutes. This process makes the tofu’s texture more
firm=less squishy. If using vacuum –packed, ‘ready to use’ tofu,
simply remove from package and rinse.
Combine the Sesame oil, soy sauce, and garlic in a cup. Mix well
using pastry brush.
Cut the tofu into 1-1 ½ inch cubes.
Place cubes on cookie tray. Lightly brush with oil mixture. Turn
tofu over and brush other side.
Bake tofu on top shelf of oven at 400 degrees for 10 minutes.
Remove from oven, turn tofu over, and bake an additional 10
minutes. Tofu should develop a nice, browned, crisp crust on
both sides. The baking process should take about 20-25 minutes
total. Longer baking will yield a firmer crust. Serve with your
favorite dipping sauce.
Serves 3-4
Ideas: Try using half regular and half toasted sesame oil for
a richer flavor. Try using a few drops of your favorite hot
sauce in the oil mixture.
